I didn't realize it when I began the stories. So this was a little much, for me. Maybe, had I read it at another time, but I don't think so. It was hard to feel any empathy for David Thorne. David has been pining for his lost love Emily for 10 years, consumed with guilt for a reason we frustratingly don't learn for many pages. When he meets a woman who looks exactly like Emily did 10 years ago, he goes down a rabbit hole of weirdness that only Koontz can create. In addition, in a parallel story, David interacts with an imprisoned mass murderer whom he thinks has answers about Emily. It was difficult to get my head around this fanciful story that takes too long to tell. The character of David is so obsessed with Emily that I found him annoying and weak. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Cook -- Not a Koontz Novel : I just finished reading one of Dean's first novels--Strangers--two weeks ago. I don't know what happened here, but The Other Emily is NOT a Koontz Novel. What happened? The writing is wooden, childish, and downright ridiculous. I don't know what's happening here, but this is not a novel written by the same man who wrote Strangers, or Watchers, or Odd Thomas, or the Christopher Snow novels. No way to I believe the writer of this garbage could possibly be the same. Who kidnapped Koontz? ( Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2021 )

I did finish the book as I hoped it would get better, but unfortunately it did not. It gave the impression that someone else has written this completely repetitive story, then gave the the last couple of chapters back to the author to finish. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Jenny Greenfield -- What on earth was that? : I feel tricked. I've read Dean Koonts before but that wasn't him. The plot was ridiculous. Ridiculous! And it got worse as the book reached its unbelievable ending. I'm quite angry, actually, that I was forced to (speed) read to the end, with promises from previous reviews of revelations that never came. Much of the book read like a travelogue and was padded out with dreary dream scenes. There was no substance, plenty of self-gratifying red herrings and all woven together with a pretentious writing style that was infuriating difficult to read. I've not written a bad review before; if I don't particularly enjoy a book I just move on to the next but this one really annoyed me. It wasted my precious time. One star. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from boot1947 -- Not vintage Koontz. : Mostly, I love Dean Koontz’ books. I loved every page of the Jane Hawk novels. But I didn’t really enjoy The Other Emily (Only me, I know!). I found the characters two-dimensional, compared with so many Koontz protagonists. Worse, I didn’t like any of them. There wasn’t even a characterful dog for distraction. I was disappointed. Someone will review this and describe the ins and outs of the plot, but I actually don’t have the energy. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pamela Scott -- Koontz on top-form : I’ve been a fan of the author, on and off since my teens so for more than thirty years. I’ve really enjoyed his last couple of books so had high hopes for The Other Emily. This is the kind of twisted, bizarre suspense novel with science-fiction elements Koontz is brilliant at writing. I love the short chapters and how quickly this helps to build suspense. I was hooked on the book within a few pages and didn’t want to stop reading until I reached the end. I had so many questions as I read. What happened to Emily? Is Maddison actually Emily? If she is, why does she seem unaware of this? If she’s not who is she and why is she Emily’s double? I loved the fact the truth isn’t revealed until the final few chapters. This is a corker. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2021 )
